Human Factor Safety Training in Oil and Gas Exploration

Just as mechanical components have limitations, humans have certain capabilities and limitations that must be considered. For example, nuts and bolts will eventually fail if enough force is applied to them.

The same principles apply, in that human performance is likely to degrade and eventually ‘fail’ under certain conditions such as stress.

Human limitations in oil and gas

Humans can:

  • become fatigued and make mistakes
  • are affected by external or environmental influences
  • can exhibit poor judgment due to lack of skills and knowledge
  • have limited perceptual powers, etc.

Performance is also affected by social and emotional factors. Workers within specific industries may work in a variety of different environments, in all types of weather and climatic conditions, day and night. Physical environments have their own specific factors that may impinge on human performance.

More about the Human Factor in Oil and Gas Training Course

When corporate management or employees at the “ front line " make poor choices or decisions, it may mean a reduced profit or even liquidation. A chain of errors may take years of poor decision making to produce catastrophic eventualities.

Oil & Gas crews often do not have the luxury of time, and their decisions must be made swiftly and accurately, and should these decisions be poor, they may result in the various negative outcomes.

The ideal is to develop an inherent culture of adherence to safety SOP’s, where staff activity is executed with an awareness of the perils or dangers in the workplace. This allows various elements within the job such as production, safety, maintenance, management and interpersonal relations to be managed cohesively to achieve optimum results.
